Military glory–that attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of blood–that serpent’s eye, that charms to destroy… ~Abraham Lincoln

At 11.00 this morning I found myself as the lone representative at the British and Commonwealth War Graves at the Eiganes Gravlund in Stavanger, Norway. It is a small site with not more than 4o WW2 graves of engineers and airmen from New Zealand, Australia and Britain.

I hadn’t realized that the 11th of November came a day early this year, I found myself a little disappointed that the convenience of Sunday had now superseded the inconvenience of two world wars, however, my observation is not why I was here.

So I played the bagpipes in my head. Stood in silence for the last post.

In war, truth is the first casualty.~Aeschylus

I remembered that we honour the dead today because almost a hundred years ago a few mens’ patriotism, egos, and desire for past glory set Europe (and the world) on fire; it was politicians like Conrad, Bertchtold, Sazonov, Pašić, and Poincaré that precipitated and drove events that eventually sent millions to die. It is men like these that have subsequently been mismanaging peace ever since.

All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it. ~Alexis de Tocqueville
