Albert Abdicates, Yawn

[music: Echoes in the Park – Pink Floyd]

Excepting for reporters, the Belgians gave a collective yawn to the news of the abdication of King Albert the something.

On my way to a friend, I was intereviwed by the RTBF about my views, the conversation went something like this:

Reporter: “What do you think about the abdication of the King?”

Me: “Don’t care much?”

Reporter: “You don’t care?”

Me: “I’m not Belgian, I’ve been here 3 years and I haven’t seen or heard much about the King.”

I went on the explain that I preferred Republics to Monarchies, which I consider a vestige of the past with little contribution to modern society.

Since the end of the war, Belgium has had a troubled relationship with Royalty, some even consider the return of Leopold III to be illegitimate (each region had to have a majority supporting his return, this was not the case). The role of the Philip as spiritual leader of the nation will be difficult as he is quite unpopular in Flanders, fortunately my Belgian friends have reassured me, the job description of King includes nothing of substance.

Here are some photos of the crowds reacting to the news.

Finnian,   I have to say that the minute divisions that Europeans seem to delight in are source of endless amusement for me. Estonians don’t want to have anything to do with Lithuanians, nor the latter with Latvians. In the Balkans, the inhabitants of every mountain valley seem to think they entitled to their own nationality. The Scots, Welsh, and English can’t put aside their differences and form a British Premier League. And now I find that Flanders (what is it, the size of Cook County?) feels like it’s not really a part of Belgium. Ya’ll needed a rallying point and you just kicked him to the curb.

Maybe you’re going in the wrong direction. Maybe what the EU needs to do is find the senior living descendant of Charlemagne, proclaim him (or her) Imporator, and start working on unity from that angle.

Well, he is abdicating, not dissolving the monarchy. He is probably leaving before the going gets really rough for Belgium, so there may a bit of self-interest in the whole thing.
The EU was supposed to be the rallying idea for the continent, but the national political leaders seem to like rattling their nationalistic sabres too much…
But horse blinding nationalism is not a European phenomenon, people everywhere seem to be buying into the idea that THEIR nation is exceptionally superior.
